Cowessess First Nation has received new mineral rights from the province under the Treaty Land Entitlement Agreement.

In a media release posted on Wednesday, the province announced they have transferred 336 hectares of mineral rights to the First Nation.

The purpose of the Treaty Land Entitlement Agreement is to transfer new reserve lands and mineral rights to First Nations, which were promised under treaty.

Under the Natural Resource Transfer Agreement, the provincial government has a constitutional obligation to assist the federal government in this promise.

Since 1992, the provincial and federal governments have committed $687 million dollars in TLE settlements and transferred nearly 900,000 hectares of land and mineral rights.

The province says there are still 1.48 million acres outstanding.
