The federal and provincial governments have partnered in a combined investment of over $750,000 to build four new, affordable homes for low-income families in Prince Albert as part of the National Housing Strategy.

The City of Prince Albert is also providing $20,000 in grant funding to support the $1.1 million project.

“Families that really want to live, work, and play in Prince Albert deserve a home that their kids can enjoy, and look how close it is to a school, a community centre, the park—it’s all about community in neighborhoods,” said Ward 7 city councilor Dawn Kilmer.

River Bank Development Corporation is a non-profit corporation that develops affordable housing units for low-income families and individuals in Prince Albert.

“We have partnered with KidsFirst, Native Coordinating Council, and Family Futures, so they’re the people that have the larger families, and those are the people we’re trying to help because these are bigger units, so they would be the first that would be able to apply and would come in first place to get those units,” explained Tina Dickson, general manager of River Bank Development Corporation.

The project consists of two duplexes, and each new property will contain a three-bedroom unit and a two-bedroom unit.

“It gives them the opportunity to grow and really feel good about themselves and to be able to help support their families, and it’s just so important because we all know having a home and having that safe place to be is so important for all families,” stated MLA for Prince Albert Northcote Alana Ross.

A sod-turning event was held this morning, and construction is set to begin immediately. The new units are expected to be complete by the spring of 2025.
