Residents of Southend will be returning home on Thursday.

The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation leadership posted an update Wednesday night where they say the Merkeley fire is no longer considered a threat to the community.

Power, water and sewer systems are fully functional.

Essential services, including the RCMP, health services, the Northern Store, and two gas stations are operational.

Buses from Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert will begin transporting residents home throughout the day on Thursday.

Residents of Southend were evacuated on August 28th.

This is the second community in the north east that was allowed to return home this week following an evacuation due to wildfires as Sandy Bay evacuees began their journey home on Tuesday.
