All levels of government have come together to fund new transitional housing units for Indigenous women in Saskatoon.

The housing will be dedicated to women and their families fleeing domestic violence.

The federal government provided $7.6 million to fund the project while the province and city have provided another $1 million.

The Central Urban Metis Federation (CUMFI) will own and operate the housing complex.

“CUMFI will deliver culturally appropriate supports while ensuring families are housed with dignity and a quality of life to promote health and well-being,” said the president of the organization Shirley Isbister. “CUMFI has long known the struggles faced by many low-income families, and this new project provides an example of how communities come together to address challenges such as affordability, accessibility, safety, and harm reduction.”

No word yet on when the housing will be operational.
