A man who admitted to murdering a Metis woman in Saskatoon over four years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.
Megan Gallagher was killed in 2020 with her body found nearly two years later in the South Saskatchewan River.
Five people were accused of murdering her.
In October, Robert Thomas pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Gallagher’s death. So far, he is the only person to admit to Megan’s killing.
On Friday afternoon, a judge at Court of Kings Bench in Saskatoon read out his sentencing decision in court that handed Thomas a life sentence and determined he would only be eligible for parole after 18 years.
This was a joint submission by Crown and defence lawyers.
The sentence also included a lifetime weapons ban, a requirement to provide a DNA sample, and a lifetime no contact order between Thomas and the other accused in Gallagher’s killing.
The courtroom was filled with family and friends of Megan Gallagher.
Robert Thomas sat in the prisoner’s box looking down while the decision was read aloud. He would stand when asked when the decision was finalized.
Much of the judge’s decision is subject to a publication ban as other accused are still awaiting trial.
The trials for the four other accused will take place in the New Year.
