RCMP spokesperson, Keely Grasser stated that at around 5:30 a.m., La Loche RCMP received a report of a residential fire on Clearwater River Dene Nation. 

One person was transported for medical care and was later declared deceased. She has been identified as a teenaged girl and her family has been notified. 

Another individual, who has yet to be formally identified, was located deceased in the residence. 

Grasser said that fire investigators with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency are en route to investigate the fire’s cause and origin. 

She said that this is not a police investigation, and the RCMP have no further information to share at this time. 

“It is with profound sadness that I share the heartbreaking news of the loss of two young lives from our community in CRDN due to a house fire this morning. Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy, and we extend our sincerest condolences during this incredibly difficult time.” stated CRDN, Chief Teddy Clark in a Facebook post.

In the post Clark also stated that CRDN will assemble a crisis team to support the families and all who are emotionally affected by the loss and tragedy.

The local school will be closed today and individuals in need of support are asked to contact the band office.
