In a media release sent out today, RCMP stated that on January 2, at approximately 8:15 a.m., Southey RCMP received a report of an injured female at a residence on Piapot First Nation.
RCMP immediately responded and located a deceased female at the residence.
She has been identified as 30-year-old Melanie Asham-Obey from Pasqua First Nation. Her family has been notified and victim services made available to them.
Asham-Obey’s death is considered suspicious in nature and Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes has taken carriage of the investigation and continue to investigate.
Mounties are now asking anyone with information to report it immediately to their local police by dialling 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
Investigators advise there will be an increased police presence on Piapot First Nation for an undetermined amount of time.
RCMP stated that they are unable to provide additional information about the investigation and updates will be provided when available. If an imminent risk to public safety is identified, RCMP will notify the public.
