On March 1, 2025, the community of Pelican Narrows celebrated the many lawyers that came from the community in a first-of-its-kind gathering with many special guests.
“It is to acknowledge our seven lawyers that have completed a law degree and then passed the bar. We articled and did pass the bar,” said Cara Merasty, organizer and lawyer. “Also to give thanks to Judge Morin, who was the trailblazer that started it all.”
The Gathering of Pelican Narrows Lawyers took place at the Cultural Centre, where they introduced the guests of honour: Judge Gerald Morin, Lawyer Cara Merasty, Lawyer Dallas Charles, Lawyer Farrah Linklater, Lawyer Nicolette Merasty, Lawyer Francine Merasty, and Lawyer Lissa Morin.
The gathering drew in a crowd with special guests from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation’s leadership and the Village of Pelican Narrows mayor.
“We supported each other, and it’s important to acknowledge this hard work of our community members and our family,” explained Cara Merasty. “Our community supported us as well, and our leadership supported us.”
Cara Merasty expressed that she thought this event was important because it showed that there are successful people that come from Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan.
“That there is going to be more after us, and we want to also have this grow to something more. So that other fields of study can be acknowledged for their hard work. Because it’s not easy going to school, leaving your community, and doing that hard work,” said Cara Merasty.
