The Metis Nation-Saskatchewan entered two new agreements on Friday afternoon to improve firearm safety for citizens.
The MN-S has signed memorandums of understanding with both the Saskatchewan Government and the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation.
“Firearms safety education is of the utmost importance to our MN-S government to ensure Metis harvesting traditions are responsibly passed down to next generations,” said President Glen McCallum.
The aim of the agreement with the government will be to improve education and firearms licensing for Metis citizens, minimize unnecessary criminalizations for some regulatory offenses, provide appropriate compensation for any seized firearms and to protect gun owner privileges.
“Through this partnership we want to encourage responsible firearm ownership and support Metis traditions in a way that keep people informed and protected,” said Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod.
The MN-S signed a similar agreement with the government in 2023.
Meanwhile, the agreement with the SWF is in regard to continued adaptation of the Saskatchewan Firearms Act.
According to representatives at an MOU signing in Saskatoon these agreements are a step forward to balancing public safety with Metis traditions.
