The federal government has announced a new approach to First Nations Education.

It has assembled a national panel of experts to help reform elementary and secondary schooling on reserve.

The Assembly of First Nations is on board with the move.

National chief Shawn Atleo says the panel is an important opportunity to profile what’s working and what isn’t.

The work of the panel gets underway this week with a visit to a reserve in Quebec.

It will then make recommendations to the minister for Aboriginal Affairs and the AFN on options for positive change in the classroom.

This includes possible legislation.

A full report by the panel is due at the end of this year.
