An 18-year-old male resident of the Hatchet Lake First Nation is dead after a boating mishap in the province’s far north Sunday morning.
RCMP say the teen was one of two people in a boat on Welcome Bay who were having difficulty staying afloat.
They ended up in the water, prompting two young people in a canoe to try to rescue them.
However, when the two people in the water tried to get into the canoe, it capsized.
All four attempted to swim to shore, but only three made it there safely.
Community members in boats found the victim’s body in 15 feet of water.
He was declared dead at the local nursing station after CPR efforts failed to resuscitate him.
