The Prince Albert airport is getting a new runway.

Canada’s Minister of Transport, Steven Fletcher, flew into the city today to make the announcement.

He says Ottawa will provide $5.9 million to tear up the old surface and repave a new one.

The work is set to begin in late August and last until late September or early October.

Prince Albert MP Randy Hoback says the mining boom in Northern Saskatchewan has increased the number of planes using the airstrip, and that’s why they need a new runway.

Officials say Cameco has 400 parking spaces at the airport alone.

The new runway is also expected to help accommodate the growing number of people flying into the city to have babies.

Mayor Jim Scarrow says 1,600 births are recorded in the city each year and many of them are northern.
