Work has begun on a new bridge at St. Louis.
The plan right now is build the structural steel for the bridge-deck by the winter of 2012, followed by concrete work a few months later.
The new bridge will go up 1.6 kilometers east of the existing bridge.
The government says that’s where the best foundation can be laid, and where it will have the least impact on farmland.
Batoche MLA Delbert Kirsch believes the new link will also boost the number of people who want to live in St. Louis as well:
“And just economic development in the area. Even development at the town of St. Louis, they’re now doing a huge sewage project to accommodate what they know is going to be an influx – to a bedroom community. People are going to live in that beautiful community and work in P.A.”
The new bridge also completes a 683 kilometer-long trucking route from Assiniboia to La Ronge.
The total cost of the project was initially estimated at thirty million, but Kirsch says that figure could be closer to 45 million.
