The Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics released their annual report for crimes in 2010 today – and Regina is at the top of the list for the overall crime rate in Canada.

Regina Police Chief Troy Hagen says there have been several improvements across the country in general when looking at the average Canadian crime rate which showed a 5 per cent decrease while Regina showed an 8 percent decrease in reported crime.

Hagen says the goal of reaching the Canadian national average on reported crimes is a slow and steady progress.

“We’re outpacing the national average and in many cases – many jurisdictions in terms of our reductions.  But it is a longer journey and not one that’s going to be arrived at in very quick order.”

Hagen says there are a number of community initiatives introduced to address crime including a program that reaches out to high risk children 11 and under.

The Crime Severity Index shows the major contributors to Regina crime are break and enters, robberies and theft under $5000.

Regina also had 8 homicides last year, including one with three victims.
