The president of the Metis National Council says a recent court decision in Alberta reaffirms Metis rights across the country.

Clem Chartier was one of the lawyers who recently intervened in a matter before the Supreme court.

The court ruled that two sections of the Alberta Metis Settlement Act do not violate the charter of rights and freedoms.

The decision essentially upheld a provincial law in Alberta that kept Metis from attaining Treaty status while holding onto their Metis citizenship at the same time.

Chartier describes this as a victory for the Metis.

He adds the ruling applies everywhere.
