SIAST is trying to make its campuses more friendly to Aboriginal students.

Six new student advisors are being added to SIAST campuses throughout the province this year.

The school says it created the positions so Aboriginal students would have an extra person to turn to when they arrive on campus.

Myrna Yuzicapi is SIAST’s special advisor on Aboriginal issues.

She says the new staff will try to answer questions facing First Nations and Metis youth who are making the transition to student life.

The school says some of the other barriers facing students include money, unfamiliar funding processes, family circumstances and unpreparedness.

Two of the advisors will go to Prince Albert, three more are being placed in Saskatoon, while the sixth is headed to Moose Jaw.
