Wild Rice Harvest Best in West

This year looks to be a mixed bag for wild rice harvesters.

Bill Plunz is a long-time expert in La Ronge and also acts as a consultant for Saskatchewan Agriculture.

He says conditions in the central region looked good during the spring.

He notes there was excellent germination and the floating leaf-stage looked excellent.

However, that all changed when the rivers started to flood.

He adds the east side has also experienced high water volumes, although there is some product coming out of Hudson Bay.

At the same time, Plunz reports producers on the west side are having a great year.

He says there’s word they could produce over a million pounds of product when it’s all said and done.
