The 2011 Hunger Count is showing that a large number of Aboriginal people in western Canada — especially Saskatchewan — are using the food bank.

The report says one quarter of the individuals helped from Manitoba through British Columbia self-identified as First Nations, Metis or Inuit.

In Saskatchewan, that number is 62.4% — the highest among the provinces, not counting the territories.

The province with the next highest percentage was Alberta at 18.5%, although Manitoba didn’t keep track.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the North Battleford Food Bank says at least 84% of clients helped in that community are Aboriginal.
