A national native leader says she’s tired of seeing the provinces hand out money earmarked for aboriginal social housing.

Betty Ann Lavallee says her group fought tooth and nail for what little money they got.

The leader of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, Lavallee says the problem is that under the current system, the provinces decide who is aboriginal and who isn’t.

She wishes funds for social housing would be delivered to groups like hers directly, and not have to go through provincial governments.

“Unfortunately for those of us who reside off-reserve, the monies are transferred to the provinces.  The provinces decide who the “real” aboriginal people are, and if you’re not a band you’re going to miss out.”

Lavallee spoke this morning at a parliamentary senate hearing in Ottawa.
