The National Panel on First Nations Elementary and Secondary Education has concluded its visit to Saskatchewan this week.
Panel members met with teachers, First Nations leaders, parents and students.
The panel says a day-long roundtable in Saskatoon highlighted the struggles of educators who say they are doing the best can with limited resources, training and support.
Teachers also expressed a need for pay parity, job security and multi-year planning to combat high teacher turnovers.
One student at Sakewew High School in North Battleford suggested that a wider range of subjects — such as law, chemistry and psychology — are needed in band-run schools to inspire youth into future careers.
The panel will deliver its recommendations from several regional meetings to the federal Aboriginal Affairs minister and the Assembly of First Nations’ National Chief by year’s end.
