An HIV/AIDS video made by Thunderchild First Nation youth is being shown at this week’s Saskatchewan HIV Conference in Regina.
Thunderchild band councillor Arnold Wapass brought the video with him to the conference, which is being hosted by the All Nations Hope AIDS Network.
It has been shown at Assembly of First Nations and Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations gatherings, as well as Youtube and the Thunderchild band website.
Wapass says word about it is spreading and he’s been getting some great feedback about it.
Wapass in in charge of the band’s health portfolio, and asked the youth to produce a video to warn band members about HIV.
He says he’s pleased with the results, adding the young people covered the issues well.
Wapass likes the fact that the video mentions there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, and talks about the need for people to protect themselves through safe sex — as well as to respect themselves.
It also contains a warning about the dangers of intravenous drug use and how that can spread HIV/AIDS.
