A new report by Statistics Canada says nearly a quarter of Saskatchewan residents will be Aboriginal by 2031.
According to the numbers, 21 – 24% of the province’s population will be First Nations or Metis.
That’s up from 2006, when the percentage was closer to 16%.
Saskatchewan and Manitoba would continue to have the largest proportions of Aboriginal residents.
Meantime, the Aboriginal population in Canada is expected to be between 1.7 million and 2.2 million residents by 2031.
The average age of Aboriginal people in 2006 was 27 years of age.
However, that is expected to rise to between 35 and 37 years over the next two decades.
As well, nearly 40% of Aboriginal people, which includes Inuit, are expected to live in a city or town by 2031.
