A documentary will air tomorrow night exploring the rising number of Aboriginal kids in Canada who are growing up without dads in the home.
The film is titled “Blind Spot”.
CBC reporter Geoff Leo says he got the idea to do the film after covering so many stories where the mothers of Aboriginal kids were the ones doing the talking.
He says the statistics of children without fathers is startling:
“Within a decade, 50% of all Aboriginal kids in Canada are going to grow up without a dad in the home. That’s the rate at which this problem is growing.”
Leo says the problem is even more pronounced in neighborhoods like North-Central Regina, where two-thirds of Aboriginal kids don’t have a dad in the home.
The documentary airs tomorrow night at 9 p.m. on the CBC News Network.
Leo says he hopes the film prompts discussion over the issue.
