Treaty commissioner Bill McKnight is calling it quits.
The man who heads up the Office of the Treaty Commissioner spoke to the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations legislative assembly this morning for the final time.
McKnight’s mandate ends in March and he says he has enjoyed his tenure.
He says he knows some chiefs want the OTC to become more forceful in the area of treaty implementation.
McKnight says levers like the Treaty Land Entitlement process, which enables bands to claim land outside the Indian Act, is one way this might be accomplished.
He adds chiefs should hurry to find a replacement because it takes time to get settled in the role.
