A vice-chief with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says he wants the provincial government to show First Nations it is willing to work with them to protect sacred sites in provincial parks.

Bobby Cameron says the province is moving ahead with plans to develop two new parks in the province, and that is something that needs to be handled carefully.

One proposed site is located near Emma Lake and Anglin Lake, while the other is south of Hudson Bay.

Cameron says there is the matter of the duty to consult process, which he has been told the province has already started.

But he adds there is also the task of identifying ceremonial and burial sites within the two sites, and seeing that they are protected:

“At the very least, there must be the proper steps taken to ensure that all sacred sites are identified and protected from desecration by people who frequent the park.”

Cameron says a dialogue needs to happen before the parks are established.
