Testimony continues today at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearing in Onion Lake.
Survivors of residential schools are taking turns sharing stories of what happened to them during their time at the institutions.
One woman, Julie Whitstone, says she was told over and over again that she was a ‘sinner’ and it’s something that has bothered her for years.
Still another survivor, Eldon Bear, says he saw a lot of abuse during his time there and that’s something compensation payments can’t erase:
“You know, the money you get from Common Experience (Payment) and IAP — it’s not going to heal you. I know that. Even though I get it, it’s going to stay in me.”
Bear adds he saw too many of his friends take their lives over the years due to the pain they felt.
The TRC will conclude its hearings in Onion Lake tomorrow.
