Officials with Sweetgrass First Nation say after being hit with two fires in the past week, the band plans to improve its fire protection.

Chief Lori Whitecalf says the band fire truck could not be used to fight the fires on the reserve this week, because it was being repaired.

Whitecalf says the band does not receive enough money to maintain a firetruck, fire hall and other equipment.

She says money from other budgets will have to be used.

The recent fires on the reserve have been contained, but two homes were destroyed.

Whitecalf also says the Sweetgrass First Nation wants to communicate more with surrounding RMs.

She notes it’s believed one of the fires was started when someone outside the reserve burned some bales.

Whitecalf says if that kind of communication was established, the band might have been able to put that fire out earlier.

She says one RM helped the band a lot, but she would like a firefighting plan involving all nearby RMs.
