The latest Aboriginal Governance Index compiled by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy has been released.
This year, five First Nations in Saskatchewan are among the top ten Aboriginal communities — based on survey responses from band members.
The organization talked to residents of 32 First Nations communities in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta.
They were asked about elections, services and administration, human rights and transparency.
Centre officials say the four highest-rated bands in the study are Ahtahkakoop, Onion Lake, Montreal Lake and Red Earth — while Mistawasis also finished in the top 10.
Over half of the respondents in the study say they are satisfied with the election process in their communities.
Common complaints among band members in the Prairies include favoritism based on nepotism, and transparency when it comes to council decisions and salaries.
The FCPP says the information gathered from respondents will be used to identify areas where all First Nations can improve.
