The president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada is speaking out about some recent cuts to her group.

Jeanette Corbiere-Lavell says she is disappointed that Ottawa is slashing 100% of NWAC’s health funding.

She says the money was used to research things like Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, nutrition, and diabetes — as well as to collaborate with clinics to ensure services could be accessed by Native women and girls.

Corbiere-Lavell says following the spring budget, her group was assured the most vulnerable people in society would not be affected by the cuts — but she says this doesn’t appear to be the case:

“But when we look at the impact that it’s having — not only through our organization, but the other national Aboriginal organizations and other organizations that are looking at the health service providers within Canada — we see that it will be a big impact.”

She stresses NWAC will continue to fight for more dollars while doing what it can for its members.
