An outreach worker in Prince Albert says she worries Aboriginal gangs are on the rise.
Tammy Burns hails from the James Smith Cree Nation and works for the local YWCA.
Burns attended a gathering of the local Metis Women’s Society yesterday.
After working for six years with at-risk youth in the city, she says a lot of progress has been made.
At the same time, Burns says too many kids are falling into dangerous lifestyles:
“At the beginning, it was really bad with everything. And right now, they’re seeing the gang involvement and that (leading) to drugs and alcohol, leading to incurable diseases — you know, HIV, STDs.”
Burns says it takes a community to raise a child, but ignorance and stereotyping can often get in the way.
