The Metis National Council has lost all of its health funding.

In a newsletter, MNC president Clem Chartier says the money was lost in the recent federal budget and has resulted in the termination of one employee.

Chartier also says it means that the Metis Nation, at least on the national level, no longer has any relationship with the federal health department.

He calls that a truly troubling development.

Meanwhile, Chartier says the federal government has also mischaracterized the rationale for slashing the budget of the National Aboriginal Health Organization.

He says the minister responsible claimed the MNC, Assembly of First Nations and a group representing the Inuit no longer supported the organization and they asked her to wind it down.

However, Chartier says the three groups merely wanted NAHO to fall under tighter control of the Aboriginal groups, with less infrastructure.

He says the minister could have gone to cabinet to seek a new mandate for NAHO, instead of scrapping it.
