A union official says the province’s decision to close three special homes for high-risk children will backfire.

SGEU President Bob Bymoen is responding to the government’s announced plans to close specialized homes in Regina, Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

Bymoen says youth in these homes are kids who have no place else to go, because they’re too dangerous to themselves or others.

He says if they’re sent to privately-run homes, they won’t get the care they need.

As a result, Bymoen says these youth will probably end up back on the street — or in the justice system.

He says that will cost the province far more than the homes they are closing.
