Delegates will choose between eight candidates — including four women — during this summer’s Assembly of First Nations National Chief election.
An assistant to the AFN’s chief electoral officer confirms this is not only the largest number of women to run for National Chief in one election, but it is also the largest slate of candidates ever.
National Chief Shawn Atleo will be challenged by Bill Erasmus, Elaine Gabriel, Joan Jack, Diane M. Kelly, Terrance Nelson, Pamela Palmater and George Stanley.
The election will take place July 18th during the AFN’s 33rd Annual General Assembly in Toronto.
The AFN Charter stipulates that the winner must receive 60% of the votes.
