Troy Cooper has been announced as the new chief of the Prince Albert Police Service.

He takes over from current police chief Dale McFee, who will be leaving the job at the end of August.

Cooper says the police service will continue its efforts to have a good relationship with the city’s Aboriginal people:

“We consider Prince Albert to be a northern community.  We have a very large Metis and First Nation community here.  Right now, probably 35 – 40% of our population is represented as Metis or First Nation — and our police service recruitment practices have allowed us to maintain that same sort of balance.”

Cooper started as a Special Constable in 1987.

He has served in his current position of Deputy Chief of Police for eight years.
