Three people from the Mosquito First Nation are dead after a car crashed and was partially submerged in water near Battleford.

RCMP say officers were called shortly after 3:00 Sunday morning after the car rolled and hit the water about 30 km south of Battleford.

Police say one of the rear passengers was able to swim out the front window and get help.

Another injured person was trapped inside the car until firefighters were able to winch the vehicle closer to shore.

RCMP say three other people died, including the driver.

The victims are 45-year-old Patrick Sanderson, 34-year-old Lee Oxebin and 28-year-old Wallie Mosquito.

A man lives down the road from the accident scene, Gerald Wahobin, says he knew all five occupants of the vehicle.

He says Oxebin is his cousin’s wife.

Wahobin says she leaves behind three teenaged children — two girls and a boy.

He adds he just saw her the other day:

“She was just here at the house a couple of days ago to get some movies off me — she and her daughters.  I don’t know how to feel right now.”

Battlefords RCMP are still investigating the accident.
