For the first time in more than 60 years, the provincial government is changing the way it provides access to social housing.
Up until now, the criteria was primarily income.
Social Services Minister June Draude says changes in the housing market have dictated a change to the way the housing is allocated.
Now, eligibility will be determined based on a number of factors which include safety and the condition of their present home. Special consideration will be given to the homeless and victims of violence.
The changes will be implemented this fall in the province’s biggest cities.
It will then be expanded to the rest of Saskatchewan over the course of the next year.
