A unique healing event for residential school survivors got underway in La Ronge this morning.

A large replica of the type of boat used to take Aboriginal children from the La Ronge area to the schools has been built and will be burned as part of a healing ceremony.

A local elder and children respresenting various Lac La Ronge Indian Band communities travelled in the boat on Lac La Ronge this morning.

The boat is being pulled and dragged to Senator Myles Venne School this afternoon.

Tom Roberts organized the event and says he got the idea after seeing pictures in the archives of a similar boat.

Tomorrow afternoon, Roberts says survivors will be invited to write down bad memories from the residential schools and throw those notes or letters into the boat — which will then be burned.

He says a number of elders will be part of the boat burning.
