The James Smith Cree Nation has been partially evacuated.

At least 80 people have fled their homes due to rising flood waters on the reserve.

Chief Wally Burns says many of the evacuees are staying in nearby Melfort until things dry out.

He says heavy rains have been the culprit:

“It’s dealing with Mother Nature, it’s the rain. We’re getting tremendous amounts of rain.  South of the reserve, it looks like a big lake.  I’ve never in my life experienced a flood or situation like this.”

He says the band has been getting help from the province and the Prince Albert Grand Council and is dealing with the situation as best it can.
