Fresh on the heels of the Olympics, four youth with ties to northern Saskatchewan will be touching down in England this week for a major competition.
The World Martial Arts Championships begin in Telford, England on Friday.
Fourteen-year-old Precious Bird of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation is one of the competitors.
She says she is looking forward to the experience:
“I’m just going there to have fun, and to try my best and to make my country proud.”
Meantime, 16-year-old Grant Bird of Prince Albert says he expects the level of competition to be extremely challenging.
He says he and his friends had to complete rigorous competitions at home before they qualified for the games.
Austin Ermine of Sturgeon Lake and Summer Sasakamoose of Sandy Lake are also competing.
The kids train out of the Aurora Martial Arts Club in Prince Albert.
Some of the events they will be competing in include kata, point sparring and weapon sparring.
The games run until August 19th.
