Officials with Areva Resources are pleased the federal government has approved the company’s environmental assessment of the proposed Midwest uranium project.
The company started work on the assessment about six years ago for the proposed open pit mine which would be located about 15 km west of the company’s McCLean Lake operation.
Areva spokesperson Jarret Adams says business details still need to be worked out:
“We’ll need to do an updated feasibility study for the Midwest project. So, at present, there is no concrete timeline — but certainly the approval of the environmental assessment is definitely a postive step for Midwest.”
Adams says it would be a significant operation once established, but not as big as some others in northern Saskatchewan:
“The indicated resources of this is a little over 42 million pounds. It’s a decent-sized mine, but not quite as big as some of the others that are more advanced — like McArthur River or Cigar Lake.”
Adams adds the proposed mine still needs approval from the province and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
