A long-time chief in northwest Saskatchewan has stepped down from his post.
After 19 years of service, Roy Cheecham says he has enjoyed his time in office as leader of the Clearwater River Dene Nation, but he has decided to move onto different things.
His resignation took effect at the end of July — but Cheecham says he will still consult for the band, as well as act as chairman for two local business enterprises.
The former chief says he has enjoyed his time in office.
Cheecham says the band was in third-party management when he entered as chief — and since then, they have been able to put themselves in a much stronger position.
He also notes the band was able to construct a 17-bed in-patient treatment centre during his tenure.
Meanwhile, the band says it will close out the remaining year without an interim leader.
An election is scheduled to take place next year.
