A friendly reminder is going out to lawyers who are representing residential school survivors under the Independent Assessment Process.
The reminder comes from the office of the Indian Residential Schools Adjudication Secretariat.
It says lawyers must make sure they explain to their clients how the IAP will work, while also making sure their firms are up to the job.
Daniel Ish heads up the secretariat.
He says they’ve had a few problems with some lawyers who didn’t properly explain the situation to the client, or who have taken on too many cases.
He notes one lawyer from Manitoba was disbarred — while another firm from Calgary had its cases taken over.
Ish adds the deadline to file claims is September 19th, and anyone who still has questions about the process should get in touch with the secretariat.
