A Metis land base is on the mind of the incumbent president of the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan.
Robert Doucette, who is seeking re-election this Saturday against five challengers, says he wants the two levels of government to deal with the issue of land ownership for the Metis.
He says Ottawa is looking to divest itself of pasture land in the province, which he argues would make an ideal venue for the process to happen:
“I know that with the divestment of all of these pastures, that the opportunity now exists for the Metis, the federal and provincial governments to sit down and talk about that land base in southern Saskatchewan.”
Doucette also wants the government to begin consultations over which areas of pasture land are divested.
He explains many of the sites could be near hunting areas, or even some Metis cemeteries.
