Results of an air quality test at Poundmaker School are expected any day now.
The consultant who performed the tests is currently interpreting those results.
Once that has been done, the results will be shared with the Poundmaker Cree Nation and the Department of Aboriginal and Northern Affairs.
The school was shut down for two or three days a few weeks ago due to health issues.
During that time, the air in the building was tested. Also, the school held teacher professional days and a cultural day for students.
The school has remained open since then.
Meanwhile, work is being done on the school’s heating and ventilation system.
Band councillor Colby Tootoosis says teachers and students suffered from a variety of symptoms.
“Sore lungs . . . a few of the teachers needed some inhalers from working in the school over a number of years. Also, sores in the nostrils, fatigue and headaches.”
According to Tootoosis, at least part of the problem was traced to sewer gas.
He says much of that smell has been eliminated now.
