A teacher from La Loche has been recognized for her efforts in saving the life of a local teenager who had been stabbed.

The incident occurred on the morning of November 3rd, 2011.

The 15-year-old victim was in the hallway when he was attacked by another boy.

Phyllis Longobardi is the assistant principal of La Loche Community School and was on duty at the time.

Longobardi says it wasn’t long before they called Julie Braaksma to the scene:

“The young fellow made it as far as our commons area.  And when we saw he was in distress, we immediately hollered to this teacher, who happens to be a paramedic — and she came running, she saw what the injury was and she knew immediately what to do.”

She says Braaksma knew to cover the wound with tape and to start taking the youth’s vital signs.

An ambulance then arrived to take him to the hospital.

Longobardi says Braaksma’s former training as a paramedic made it a good thing she was there.

Lt. Gov. Vaughn Schofield was on hand today for a ceremony where Braaksma was presented with a St. John Lifesaving Award.
