The RCMP is promising a full review into the shooting death of a man involved in a standoff with police in La Ronge.
38-year-old Shawn W. Martinot was shot and killed by police at about 2:30 this morning at a local hotel.
Just prior to the shooting, members of the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team attempted to get the armed man to come out of a room in the hotel using a robot and tear gas.
RCMP spokesperson Heather Russell says Martinot opened fire on the robot and then entered the hallway where police were waiting. She says when Martinot came toward police with a rifle, RCMP members shot and killed him.
Russell says the standoff started yesterday morning when Martinot entered the hotel’s lounge with a rifle.
During the course of the 16-hour standoff, Russell says they heard shots coming from Martinot’s room on three separate occasions.
However, she says rumours of a hostage-taking are not true.
