The provincial government is substantially increasing funding to a couple of emergency shelters that provide help for the homeless.
Social Services minister June Draude made the announcement in Regina at a group home run by the YWCA.
It provides emergency shelter for struggling families looking for a place to live.
“This gives us a chance to make sure that children, and families that have more than one child, will be able to have a bed for those children — and that they will be appreciated and supported.”
The executive director of the YWCA, Deanna Elias Henry, says the extra funding will help — but the affordable housing crisis is not going away.
“Unfortunately, I just don’t think another homeless shelter is the answer. I think we have to come up with some better solutions, some longer solutions. In the meantime, we might have to come up with emergency things for cold weather. But we really have to look at this in a bigger picture, and not simply as a shelter.”
The per diem funding for families will increase from about 80% to 350%, depending on how many children are in the family.
