The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has announced plans to gather statements from inmates at two jails in Prince Albert.

On Thursday and Friday, TRC members will talk with inmates at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary and Riverbend Institution.

In a release, TRC Chairman Murray Sinclair says the commission wants to give the residents a chance to be heard.

He says there is “perhaps no other group of individuals in this country that better exemplify the schools’ tragic legacy.”

The commission notes Aboriginal inmates make up a disproportionately high number of those incarcerated in Canada.

It’s the first time the process has been undertaken at a federal jail, although some hearings have been held at regional facilities in Yellowknife and Kenora.
