The impact of poverty is the subject of a special “movie-night” in Saskatoon.
Beginning at 7:00 p.m. the Broadway Theatre will screen three short films about how poverty affects the local community.
The first film follows the coach of the Saskatoon Blades, Lorne Molleken, who recently tried living on a daily food-basket from the city’s food bank for one week.
The second shows the challenges facing an inner-city mother while the third deals with the Saskatoon health region.
Event organizer Helen Oliver says the films will be followed by a lively question and answer session.
She hopes the films spark some new ideas about how to tackle poverty in Saskatoon:
“I hope they recognize that poverty is real in Saskatoon. That it’s a local issue, that it isn’t something that happens only faraway. And I hope they also realize that to address poverty is really going to some work take at addressing things like employment and housing and supports for people to get out of poverty because there’s real barriers for people that live in poverty in Saskatoon to get out of it.”
She adds the event is completely free.
