Two women from Northern Saskatchewan are on their way to Africa.

Bonnie Masuskapoe and Chandra Gillis are both members of the Canada World Youth Program that just wrapped up a volunteer-trip on the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian reserve in Ontario.

They, along with seven other youth from Canada and nine others from Tanzania, lived with host families on the Ojibway territory and spent two months volunteering on the reserve.

Masuskapoe is a project supervisor with Canada World Youth.

She says the First Nation, affectionately known as “wiki”, was much different than her home reserve on the Athahkakoop First Nation:

“It’s on an island, so it’s all rocky.  Everywhere you go you’ll wind up near water and it’s so beautiful.”

For her part Gillis, who is originally from Buffalo Narrows, says the experience was extremely rewarding.

Their next part of the journey is in Tanzania and Gillis says she’s excited about the opportunity to head over there:

“So we’re moving on to the next phase of the program and I’m really excited to see what Tanzania will bring.”

The Canada World Youth Team will be working on an environmental program focused on creating sustainable communities.
